Silas.
A young, gorgeous boy with a cleft nose.
A face that makes you stop, soften, and feel something before you even know his story.
His story starts the way too many do in our city: left behind in an abandoned house, chained with a padlock, covered in fleas, spirit defeated.
We cant help but think was he kept as “the monster,” forced to wear an image that never belonged to him? It didn't, doesn't and never will. Was the image made to carry someone else’s ugliness so they didn’t have to look at their own? 100%. Humans are the monsters.
The very first video told his truth.
We didn’t see a monster.
We saw a beautiful baby boy who was lost. Heartbroken.
Watching his environment and wanting nothing to do with it.
His soul knew, even then, that this wasn’t love and this wasn’t life.
We saw a boy who had never been given acceptance or safety, but somehow still quietly believed it existed.
He landed at Chicago Animal Care & Control terrified. He wouldn't allow touch.
He might exhale for one small moment near a kennel where a dog said hello to him, but even then, his body was trembling, his eyes kept saying the same thing—help.
His CACC volunteers never gave up on him, and neither did we.
An incredible foster stepped up.
They made space, made opportunity, made routine, and ultimately provided a trusted and safe place for our guy to grow into his greatest self.
We truly cannot imagine the world without this absolutely incredible introvert. Once Silas had a soft place to land, the real Silas showed up. Not loud. Not demanding. Just… profoundly a very good, goofy, soft spoken, intelligent, polite, cuddly, playful and loving boy.
Silas is the kid who stands up for others.
He’s the kid who helps elders cart their groceries home.
He’s the kid who waits for everyone to eat before he takes his turn.
He’s the kid who stays late by your side because you’re anxious.
He’s the kid who holds your hand because you’re sad.
He’s the kid who writes poetry.
He’s the kid who secretly is an incredible dancer.
He’s the genius in the story.
He’s the glorious heart and soul of what makes the world worthy of love.
We are forever grateful for his honest humility, his silliness, his kindness, and the gracious way he commits to his community once he knows he’s safe.
Silas didn't survive. He prevailed.
He’s the living proof of why we fight for the overlooked ones: the dogs who don’t present well in a cage, the ones too scared to perform, the ones who would be passed over a thousand times because fear looks like distance until you learn how to read it.
Silas is the perfect example of the underdog that so easily never gets the chapter he deserves.
Silas is looking for his forever people, the ones who will keep his world gentle, his days bright, and his toes twinkling in the chapter where he finally gets to be adored— Forever, with his own late name!!! He’d love a home with another social dog, because life is always better with a buddy… and Silas has so much quiet, addictive magic to share.
This boy is simply so, so, so great, and we are forever grateful to all who stepped up to give him at chance at life.
